This Memory is a Keeper

... sharing a brief moment at the shopping center

Virginia Hanley

The little girl knew that her mother was in a hurry but she still looked hopefully at her as they came out of the door of the grocery. Sometimes Mama would stop and let her ride on the small carousel on the sidewalk. It wasn't as big as some carousels she had seen on TV but it was just the right size for her. And the tinkly music made her feel good, too.

The mother noticed the little girl edging towards the merry-go-round and impatiently started to walk past it. Then she thought, "Oh, why not take a few minutes and give her a little pleasure."  She helped her daughter get on the little pink pony and inserted the money to start the ride.

As she stepped back to wait for the end, she noticed a small, grey-haired lady watching. Then, the mother heard a soft little voice singing along with the music,

Daisy, daisy, give me your answer do,
I'm half crazy, all for the love of you,
It won't be a stylish marriage.
I can't afford a carriage.
But you'll look sweet
Upon the seat,
Of a bicycle built for two.

The three of them laughed as the mother helped her smiling little girl off the pony. The old lady ruefully thought, "I probably know all the words of all the songs on that record. And this is the only place I can sing them."

Then they went their separate ways after sharing a special moment.
