The versatile apple

 ... an enterprising senior diner

by Joe Smith

Joe Smith smiles as he considers the Delicious apples given to him when he offered to bake a pie for the donors. It all happened at lunch at the Milano Senior Center recently.

Apples come in various sizes, shapes, colors and flavors. The best of eating apples is the Delicious, red or yellow. [More Red Delicious are sold in the U.S. than any other variety. This is due to its excellent storage quality].

The best apples for cooking or baking are the "macho" Granny Smith, Cortland or almost any tart apple. Any apple is good for your health. Remember: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Another memory is the caramel-coated apple on a stick and sold at carnivals.

Just about the best fruit God ever made.
