I Made The Team

by Marianna Galvin Cerretani

As we look forward to the new baseball season I would like to tell a story which I enjoy telling. It's not about Major League Baseball, not about Minor League Baseball, not even Little League Baseball.
In the 1930's youth baseball was played by a group of neighborhood kids usually between ten to twelve players. Most of these kids had backyards but the games were always played on the street. That was not a problem back then.
The boys would buck up to choose captains. Then the captains would alternate choosing players. If there was an extra player he would catch for both sides.
I was the only girl in our family. eside Mom and Dad I had one younger and two older brothers. They played baseball but I couldn't.Why???I asked.Because you're a girl.To me that was a poor excuse. How come I could play "Kick the can","Relivo"and all those other games? But not baseball. Two of those favorite excuses were I could get hit by the bat or by the ball."What's the chance?" I asked.I never saw anyone get hit.
