Reflections on interjections

... it's like you know -- whatever

by Russ Priestley

To garner more readers, someone suggested we should write in the vernacular of younger readers. This is not easy because Mirror writers have all experienced many sunrises. This internet journal has been published from the beginning by like you know seniors...or whatever.

Our articles are frequently you know like memories and may not be of interest to a group which did not like live through World War II (that is two, not eleven). It was this misconception which I read in like a magazine. I realized you know these kids don't have a clue. They don't like know you know that this was like a big war ... after the war to end all wars, you know whatever. At that point, I suggested we write some articles on WWII and you'll find that special section on the like left side of the front page. I felt you know like this generation should be informed or whatever about how close they came to speaking you know German or like Japanese...whatever.

That young person did not you know know anything about the like Roman type he was reading. Although I was not there (I'm not THAT old), I can tell you that the Roman chiselers used stone to "write" on, right? Yes, right on. And you know like we sometimes complain about our like pens or paper or whatever. They put a serif on top and the bottom of each character, except like you know O and Q. I don't believe like they were trying to make more work for like a bigger paycheck. (No, you know like I don't believe the weekly paycheck was cast in like stone).

Somewhere you know along the line the Goths caught sight of this so-called type, or whatever. They decided they would like you know to design characters without serifs. Hey, it's like less work! Production or whatever was not a factor you know in those days. After the Romans finished like their workday, you know they would forget the serifs and party all night... or whatever. The Goths and the Romans were like you know serious competitors, but the Romans had like you know better parties.

Whatever, the Goths like decided to do away with serifs. They saved much you know chiseling. (I'm not inferring that the Romans were you know dishonest, nor do I say like the Romans got stoned, or whatever, every day). The Goths like decided you know they would banish serifs forever. It would save like chiseling and save you know time and stone chips, whatever.

Many readers you know do not know the difference between like a character and a letter. I'll like explain it. A letter is you know a group of characters which one has assembled to convey a message, whereas a character is like just one of the units in a letter. Whatever, maybe I've imparted some like knowledge... you know.
