The heart of Temple Beth Shalom

... rededication

by Carol Nelson and Shirley Rabb

On Sunday, October 4th, Temple Beth Shalom on Leonard Road, Melrose had a celebration for hanging the mezuzah.

The temple recently reopened its doors after a year of repair and renovation. The interior is now spacious and well-lit. The Ark has been repositioned to the East framed, artfully in natural wood, and every detail well-thought out and beautiful. The Ark itself is an ornamental closet, a repository for the Torah scrolls, which are the Old Testament written by hand on parchment.

Above the Ark, spelled out in tiles, are the Hebrew symbols for the words: "From Generation to Generation" and in the very center is the eternal flame.

Before 1950, families gathered in each other's living rooms and during 2008 services were held in the Incarnation Church, on Upham Street, the Highlands Congregational Church, and Temple Emmanuel in Wakefield.

Today the congregation has a newly remodeled building to celebrate their services, and with new classrooms for the children, this temple will continue from generation to generation.
