Signs of our times

...summer into fall

by Shirley Rabb

Here in Melrose, during the summer and early fall months we had a digging project going on. It appears that many of the water mains had to be replaced along many of the major streets. It took fancy equipment controlled by a band of workers to handle the situations going on in the area.

There were special details of policemen available to see us around the town. There were trucks digging, filling in and hauling away parts of the roads.  Roads partially resurfaced followed by trucks that raised their loads of tar to deposit on the gravel, followed by trucks which flattened the black top to the gravel. But most of all it was the signs everywhere.

The pipes coming from under ground and extending along the streets added to the time frame of the city’s plan. The orange barrels and cones, and the strange drawings on the street were all part of the plan to confuse us.

Left over pieces of pipes and grates and colored manhole covers spread across the area like strange looking objects of the past.

We Melrosian’s have prevailed, we made it through the tough times and I believe that in the spring of 2010 the process will start again.  But for now we have winter potholes to look forward to.
