More thoughts while shaving

... and more "nicks"

by Jim Tierney

I feel sad when someone tells me they "didn't sleep a wink last night," when it's so hard to face the day after a bad night's sleep. I ask them if they ever tried the mantra system to help. It's somewhat like counting sheep, except you don't see the sheep and "worry" about them NOT getting over the fence.

Simply, concentrate on a meaningless word and keep repeating it, over and over, blocking out any other thoughts. If you can't think of a meaningless word, or keep forgetting it, use the word 'mantra'. It blocks out your other thoughts, like trying to solve the problems of family, friends, the world, etc. This works for me nine out of ten times. And if that doesn't work, pray the Serenity prayer over and over: "God give me the Serenity to accept the things I can't control, the Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference."

Do you ever get THIS response when you tell someone that someone has died..."You're kidding???...or..."are you serious"...or..."I can't believe it." I'm assuming you're NOT kidding, unless it's April Fools' Day...and even THEN you wouldn't joke like that, would you? When it happens to me I'm tempted to say  "When you come to the wake you can see for yourself." Another response you get sometimes is "I'm shocked," when the person who died is 87 years old. Why would they be shocked? Isn't it sort of expected at that age. I can see being shocked if it's age 6 or 26. Wouldn't a more appropriate response be "well he (she) lived a nice long productive life and it was time for God to take him (her) for a job well done.
