Letters for September 2010
... Memories of Lennie's-on-the-Turnpike live on
from our readers
The October 3, 2003 issue of the Melrose Mirror featured Steve Johnson's
article about Lennie's-On-The-Turnpike. Seven years later he is still getting
feedback. This is his latest. To read the original article, click on the
Google Search bar at the bottom.
I just received this e-mail from a guy in Madagascar who discovered the
Melrose Mirror and my "Lennie's" article from our October, 2003 issue. He
is actually from Tucson, Arizona (by way of Peabody, MA). It is amazing, to
me, how this article endures and how the Mirror reaches all over the world
to people who knew and appreciated Lennie's-On-The-Turnpike. Lennie sure
did it right!

I just read your piece on Lennie's on the Turnpike.
It brought back a bunch of great memories.
I grew up in Peabody and as a kid worked/hung around Four Star Texaco which
used to be at the lights/jug handle on Rte 1 in Peabody.
We all met BB King who was playing at Lennie's because his drummer's VW van
broke down and Four Star towed for the Mass State Police.
I have had the pleasure of seeing BB King a bunch since but I'll never
Right now I am in Madagascar on a project till the end of October and was
surfing the web.
If you are ever in Tucson you now have my phone number and email address if
you want to talk about Lennie's
