A sad winter's romance song

... you know the tune

by Carol Nelson

It really started in late summer out by the tomato plants, in the sun. Then it progressed to gifts: potato salad, a cup cake, a small, round, seedless watermelon...

Was I being courted? A romantic dinner in lovely surroundings caused me to think so. We shared stories and a brief hug in the parking lot which was my idea.

But there were long spaces of time between the potato salad and the cupcake and the watermelon.

I made dinner. The second hug so warm, so sweet. But that was 3 weeks ago.

Then Christmas and New Years... fa la la:

On
The first day of Christmas
My true love gave to meeee
A pound of potato salad, in a tupper ware container,
but
No partridge in a pear treeeee.

On
The 2nd day of Christmas
My true love gave to meeeee
A frosted cheesecake cupcake,
but
No partridge in a pear treeee.

On
The 3rd day of Christmas
My true love gave to meeeee
A juicy watermelon,
A seedless watermelon,
but
No partridge in a pear treeee.

On
The 4th day of Christmas
My true love gave to meeee
A full-color photo calendar,
A Boy Scouts of America calendar,
With 365 empty dated squares,
but
No partridge in a pear treeeeeeee.
