My great grandmother, Ida Merriam Day, very late of Everett, Massachusetts, used to say that she
was "commencing" to do this or that. For example: " I am commencing to cook dinner." Similarly, I had a dear friend who always said he was "getting ready to" do this or that. This was a good way to garner points even if he never did do anything. Nowadays it's "just do it." I always made long lists for everything from groceries to New Year's resolutions but lately my grocery list has changed. I no longer buy cookies. I don't venture down the chip and soda aisle. I don't buy pastry, dairy, or meat. My list is short. And as for resolutions, I try to "just do it."
