Do you remember the comic strip of the rich couple Maggie and Jiggs? Jiggs frequently had Gout, a painful condition usually in the feet, especially the big toe. It’s the result of a buildup of uric acid in the blood from rich food and drink. It was considered a “rich man” or “King’s” disease because of their easy access to rich foods, like scallops, mushrooms, anchovies, herring, etc. I always associated Gout with the rich and famous, like Jiggs, so when any one of my “less than rich and famous” friends or relatives tells me they have Gout, I question them even if they have the usual symtoms. I tell them they don’t have enough money to have Gout and when they ask what it is if they have all the symtoms of Gout, I tell them they have a “sore foot.”
