Digging up the dirt on Ell Pond

... army engineers make an offer ...

from Len Dalton

Back in 1948 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers offered to install a 60 foot deep
steel bulkhead all along the northern side of Ell Pond to preclude further soil
going in the Pond. A Doctor Leonard, a Melrose official at the time, was among
those who declined the offer saying he was apprehensive of political strings
involved. At the same time the government offered Melrose Hospital $1,000,000 no
strings attached which Doctor Leonard also declined. Had the bulkhead been
installed, Ell Pond would today be a much finer asset to the City of Melrose.  Len
