Thoughts while shaving

by Jim Tierney

When did the standard rules of measurement change? I must have been sorting my socks and missed it. I remember very clearly the 16 ounce pound and the 128 ounce gallon that apparently has changed without any official notification. Maybe you haven’t noticed (of course you have!!), the pound has gradually reduced on many food items. For example, coffee was always a 16 ounce pound and is now an 11 ounce pound, coming down one ounce at a time so you wouldn’t notice, and ice cream is down from a half gallon, 64 ounces to 48 ounces. Can you find a gallon (128 ounces) of detergent or bleach anywhere? These have been reduced to ounce numbers that vary from brand to brand to further confuse us. They try to outfox us by reducing the content rather than raise the price that we would notice more readily, even though the price DOES go up eventually. “Surveys” tell them that they can do this and fool us. Maybe they’re right!! We DO seem to buy items they advertise for $9.99 that we would not buy for $10.00???
