What's that happening in Stoneham?

... a massive undertaking is taking place in the Fells

by Tom Dillon

A massive undertaking is taking place behind the office complex on Woodland Road in Stoneham. I was riding by the site and decided to see why all the barriers closed the road. The project is in the first stage of site preparation. The magnitude of this project is unbelievable. A twenty million gallon tank, built underground, will provide emergency water storage for Charlestown, Everett, Malden, Medford and Somerville. 190,000 cubic yards of excavated material must be removed. Concrete pour for foundations is scheduled for December.

I was amazed by the scope of this project, being accomplished by so few workers. I could only see about twelve men on the job. Machines do everything.
