Thoughts while shaving

Jim Tierney

Young children are anxious to get older and always answer the question “how old are you” with “I’m 5 going on 6”, even if 6 is 11 months away. Of course, this changes as we get older because we don’t want to be” going on” 30, 40, 50, etc. However, when we get to our twilight years, we revert back to our childhood and we are elated to tell people we are or going to be 75, 80, 85, etc. Why aren’t those middle years people happy like that?  And I wonder what ever happened to that first year of our life because it seems to have disappeared. When you  reach a 40th birthday, you are not reaching 40, you’ve already completed 40 years the day before and you are beginning your 41st year on your 40th “birthday”. When friends and relatives reach milestones like 30, 40, or 50, I enjoy telling them to relax, that they’re NOT 40; that was yesterday. When I tell them they’re already in their 41st year, they’re not too happy with me.
