Just be nice

... It's Lent. Forty days before Easter

by Betty Rossi

It's Lent. Forty days before Easter Sunday and I'm trying to remember the Ten Commandments. I definitely remember some, like the first one. "I am the Lord thy God, Thou shalt not have strange gods before me." Then, "Keep holy the Lord's Day" and "Honor thy father and thy mother". So that's three. I remember the "shalt nots". "Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor". Hmm, then there are the "do nots". "Do not covet thy neighbor's wife. Do not covet thy neighbor's goods. Do not commit adultery". How many is that? Let's see, that's nine. That's all I've got. Let me think. What the heck is the last one? I've known them my whole life. Don't tell me that I have to look up the Ten Commandments! There should be a Commandment, "Remember the Commandments" or "Thou shalt not have angry thoughts or deeds against thy neighbor". Is that one? "Love thy neighbor as thy self"? Oh brother, this is really, really awful. I am going to "Google" the Ten Commandments.

Oh, it's "Don't take the name of the Lord in vain". I am amazed. I really did "google" the Commandments and there is so much information, it popped right up. Every country should do an airplane drop over it's country with the Commandments on it, with a few more, like "Do not hurt children". "Do not hurt animals". "Thou shalt stop pornography". "Thou shalt not bully". "Thou shalt not have wars". "Thou shalt stop paying baseball and other sports people so much money and lower the price of tickets and hot dogs". "Thou shalt stop selling illegal drugs and hooking kids up on 'dope'." "Thou shalt learn to read and write". "Thou shalt be an honest politician." "Thou shalt help those in need without bragging about it, just because it is the right thing to do."

Maybe in great big letters, we should just remember "Thou shalt be nice to one another." Period. Think of that song, "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me."
