I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden sung by Lynn Anderson. I'll never forget this song, not because of the song, but how it was used in a church homily. The priest set the stage. News spread fast that Jesus was FINALLY coming and will appear downtown at noon. The crowds gathered and welcomed him with thunderous applause. They listened intently to him reaching and waited and waited for him to perform a miracle or two or three. When it became obvious that no miracles were forthcoming, the crowds slowly dispersed. Jesus watched them leaving steadily while he preached and stopped occasionally to say I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden. The priest inserted these words into Jesus preaching several times throughout his homily. I heard this homily about 40 years ago and whenever I hear that song it brings back the memory AND the message. I don't usually remember last months homily, never mind 40 years ago. During Jesus time on earth, He DID perform many miracles that converted non-believers. If that homily scenario DID happen today, WOULD the doubting Thomas's walk away from Jesus preaching, unless he showed them some miracles? Probably!!!
