... in the heat of mid-summer
The cornerstone of St. Mary's Church was laid on June 28, 1891. The
church iself was completed in 1893 and dedicated in 1894.
In 1940, a bolt of lightning badly damaged the steeple and it had to be
removed and repairs made. In 2000 the roof was replaced and repairs to
the tower were made, along with renovations to the interior of the church,
including installing air conditioning.
I can find no reference to any other extensive work being done to the
exterior other than painting and minor repairs.
So, now, it is time to give the outside a facelift. With insulation being blown
in, wrapped in Tyvek and new siding, St. Mary of the Annunciation Church
should be ready for the next 100 or so years.
The day after the school next door closed for the Summer the work began.
According to Pastor, Fr. Mark Ballard, the work is right on schedule in spite
of the fact that they stop work during funerals, of which we have had quite
a few this summer.
