Its quiet at Pine Banks

...looking forward to scary

by Shirley Rabb

The children have all gone back to school; and because of a drizzle in the air even preschoolers have not been taken to the colorful playground.

The sky, which can be seen between the still towering trees, is steel grey.

Nothing is moving, no squirrel or chipmunk, and no cars pass by.

The trees stand like sentinels watching over the dry grass and patches of dirt.

The roots of the trees stretch across the hill climbing down the slope to the road.

It could be a scary preview to the season of Halloween.

The imagination comes to life and perhaps monsters or vampires lurk over the hill waiting for the end of the month.

There are no bird songs to be heard; nor are there cries for help.

Maybe, just maybe, and more probably, I will not want to be here on Halloween Eve.
