I was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts. in the winter of 1933. My Father was American born and my Mother a European immigrant. I attended public schools and graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School for girls in 1951. I had completed the college course but decided to try retail work for a time before making a decision about attending college. I was hooked!

The remainder or my working life has been in the field of retail.

I started my first. job at Woolworth's just selling everything. Quickly moving on to window dressing, ordering, and unofficial assistant manager. (Women did not hold a titled position at that time.) I stayed with Woolworth's for 18 years moving out of the store environment to travel in areas of new store set-ups, re-organization of personnel and problem areas both in Massachusetts. and in states along the Eastern Coast.

During those 18 years, I did leave for other jobs. I worked for a CPA, a travel company and after taking a course for airline ticketing agent I went to work with Eastern Airlines; but I always went back to Woolworth's.

When I finally did leave Woolworth's I started as a manager for Gilchrist's, one of the chain department stores in Massachusetts. From the manager position I traveled as a store coordinator working for the merchandise department and its buyers. I was promoted to buyer of lingerie in 1970 and remained in that position for four years.

At that point, as the company was failing, I moved to a discount department chain store as a buyer. I spent only one year with this company, which also went out of business, and tried the Personnel field, managing a Temporary personnel agency. The idea of selling people skills for short term jobs did not appeal to me so although I stayed two years I finally went back to 'real' retail.

My next job was with Nature Food Centres starting as a troubleshooter for the Eastern Seacoast Region, traveling extensively, correcting problems in respect to hiring and training. After one year I became the store manager of their largest New England retail store. I stayed with this company until 1981 when I was offered a job with an international distributor, retailer and wholesaler of health foods and supplements. When this company filed for Chapter 11 I moved to my home in Maine.

After a brief hiatus I started as a sales and management employee with a family chain of shoe stores. I worked for this company for six years traveling from my home in Shapleigh to Portland Maine. The hour drive was beautiful over mountain view roadways and in the fall the colors would take my breadth away. The winter was never a problem for many evenings I followed the plow for 30 miles almost to my driveway.

My Father became quite ill so I moved back to Massachusetts to be closer to him and went back to work with Nature Food Centres.

Company buy-out and new management did not agree with me so when I was offered the opportunity of opening a new vitamin and supplement store with a large chain, I took the job.

I stayed with this company for six years before I decided to retire. Although I still help out for inventories and store realignments I am enjoying my leisure time to travel and to spend more time in my Maine home.

This past year a friend and I drove around the perimeter of the United States and Canada and had a wonderful time seeing this beautiful country from back roads.

Joining with the Silver Stringers was my friend's idea.I have always been interested in writing and photography and this will give me the opportunity to express myself more freely on paper, or the internet, with the help of this unique group.
