George Nelson Torrey received both his B.A. and M.A. from Suffolk University and both his Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study and his Doctorate in Education from Boston University. He has also attended the Universidad de Valencia in Spain and the University of London (where he also taught Media courses).

Born in Rockland, Maine, he became an official Melrose resident in 1956,

Prior to retirement Dr. Torrey was a Professor of English at Salem State College. One of the first professionals to recognize the potential of Instructional Media in higher education. He championed the cause of Instructional Media throughout the state and nation.

The author of numerous books and articles on Behavioral Communications, Dr.Torrey's efforts have been singled out for recognition by many professional organizations devoted to the improvement of public education.
