Jack was born in Middletown, Connecticut. After college graduation, he moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts to work nearby in the social service department of the Massachusetts General Hospital. There, while working with patients in the ancient medical wards of the Bulfinch Building, he developed his interest in gerontology.

Later, he received his Masters in Social Work from Boston University and then worked for several years in the Services for Older People Unit of the Family Service Association on Beacon Hill. In 1987, he became the director of the Melrose Council on Aging.

Jack lives with his wife, a special educaton teacher, and their four boys, the oldest of whom will be attending college in the fall of 1999. He enjoys computers, photography and spending time with his family.
